Each studio day begins and ends with material. Prospecting clay, rock, and fuel, concocting bodies and surfaces, grinding stone, gently guiding each of these actors through their stages, and tending fires as seasons to weather his work. Quiet, functional wares are thrown on the wheel, with just enough touch of hand to find an indirect familiarity of human form when held to fingers and lips in daily use, uniting our human lives with the lives of others.
